on that in just a moment. i wish i could say there's big news about the debt ceiling talks. i can't tell you that. there's more drama than dealing going on in d.c. right now. a fifth round of talks is set for today. but yesterday didn't go so well. house republicans called for a short-term extension and house majority leader eric cantor says this is what the president said in response. quote, don't call my bluff, eric. and then he walked out a few minutes later. president obama said all along he'd veto any short-term measure. ed administration says failure to raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by august 2nd could trigger a partial default on the part of the united states. thanks to that debt ceiling issue and the possibility of default you're on notice. i'm on notice. everyone from maine to san diego is on in. moody's investor services, the debt rating agency plans to review the nation's aaa bond rating and might downgrade it from stable to negative. standard & poors has the u.s. bond rating under review. let's talk about foreclosures for a second. realty track, the company that tracks the for

john boehner and president obama both talked of doing something big to change america's unsustainable economic path. what do you think? do you think that opportunity's lost? >> well, a week is a long time in politics. it can be a lifetime. i think what's now clear is that the big deal, the grand deal, the grand bargain of $4 trillion over ten years is dead, it's gone. i think the chances of getting a deal at $2.5 trillion or the middle-level deal, very unlikely because the president does not want to go that high without tax increases and republicans are not going to do it. here's the hard question i think that's coming up. the house republicans are now pushing a very, very tough deal through the house. over in the senate side, the republicans and democratic leaders are working together on a version of the mcconnell plan. and the president will accept that, as he said in his news conference friday. but whether the house republicans would accept that or not is a big, big question. it seems to me that's the lead horse, that's the lead solution right now, is a version of the mcconnell pla

higher. the ftse and the dax are both down. sony is reporting big losses. let's go to kyung lah, live in tokyo. good morning, kyung. >> reporter: good morning, ali. it's not just sony but it is a bad day in a lot of boardrooms and many of the electronics companies here in japan. we saw a lot of reporting of the quarter from april to june. sony posted a loss of 191 million u.s. dollars. panasonic, down 390 million. sharp down 630 million and nintendo says they lost in that quarter 327 million u.s. dollars. why? well, partially because of the march 11th earthquake. they are still trying to recover from the poor sales and the supply problems. the other theme we keep seeing over and over again from these electronics companies is the currency problem. the u.s. dollar is sinking. sinking very rapidly in these last six weeks. u.s. manufacturers, just like japanese manufacturers all operate on the u.s. dollar. and so when japanese manufacturers then have to repatriate these funds here, they lose if the dollar is sinking and the yen is rising. what is pushing the dollar down is all of that u.s

's right. you know, the big point of contention yesterday was with house majority leader eric cantor pushing for this short-term deal or a series of short-term deals. the president, according to democratic sources familiar with the talks, made it clear that that is something he does not support and something he would veto. the president has, for the last few days, and certainly weeks as well, been pushing for the biggest deal possible where it it seemed to get some support. of late, it has not. the president believing if you start talking about the short-term deals, you run into the political season where you negotiate the things all over again. if you can't get this done now, how will you get this done in the thick of the political season? tense discussions yesterday. the president agitated and believing that republicans are using the debt talks to make political points. the president making the point, according to those inside the meeting, that this kind of atmosphere just confirms some of the worst fears that americans have about the way washington works. >> well, yeah. the way wa

. they do, however, believe she's no longer in central florida. when she left the jail, you saw the big crowds there. there were people yelling "killer" in that crowd as she got into the suv and left. there is a great deal of emotion still unresolved around this case. we saw a lot of people getting together who were doing something peaceful with those emotions over the weekend. they went to the site where caylee anthony's body was discovered and held a march from that site to the anthony home. all to remember the child whose death started all of this. it was a very solemn occasion. a lot of people walking in the street. at one point it was reported there were cars lined up on the road about a half mile long of people just parking on the roadside going into those woods where her body was discovered to go to that spot and remember that little girl. again, a great deal of emotion. people trying to process all of this on their own. but casey anthony at the moment is still staying out of the public eye even though she has a lot of legal entanglements she will still have to address in the mon

other big stories we've got going on today, one of them being casey anthony will walk out of jail a free woman in six days. now, you hear that, and think back to 48 hours ago. it was at this time tuesday that casey anthony was facing the possibility of life in prison, maybe even facing the death penalty. what a difference 48 hours makes, because today she is counting the days until she walks out of the jail a free woman. she is counting down to six. you know by now, casey anthony was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter caylee, but convicted on four counts of lying to investigators. just before sentencing, the deceives tried and failed to reduce down to one. here are the four counts. lying about working at university studios, liking about caylee being with a nanny, the fick tick zanny you heard solve about. and lying about speaking to caylee on the phone. this morning, the judge melvin perry gave her the maximum to each of those counts. >> i will sentence you to one year in the orange county jail, xwokting a $1,000 fine on each count all four counts to run consecutive to each o

a big influencer here, so has -- so have the pledges to not increase taxes by americans for tax reform. what's your sense of what this does for any future discussions about spending, budget cuts, tax increases or stimulus? >> well, here's what i think the administration would say right now, ali. we don't know all of the details right now. if the deal includes a promise that we're going to get expedited action on a tax reform package, which would have to include something like an 800 billion to a trillion dollar revenue increase as part of it, doing lower rates or broadening the base but with revenues, the sort of thing the speaker, john boehner and president were talking about. it may not be quite as bad a deal for the president. what the white house is saying, we have a stop gap here. if they don't want to increase revenues by the end of 2012, barack obama is still the president and he vetoes the repeal of the bush tax cuts so they end up with a worse situation. now, that's -- the best case that you can make perhaps with this kind of deal but not over with yet. at the same time, whate

from new york. two big stories this morning, the final space shuttle landing and dozens of people here in the united states believed to be dead because of this incredible heat wave. >>> let's start with the shuttle. we are now less than one hour away from the final space shuttle landing. just in the last half-hour, we got a go for landing from nasa. the deorbit burn took place in the last couple of minutes. in the burn, the shuttle's engines are fired to help it slow down before it hits the atmosphere. in less than 30 minutes the shuttle and crew will start to feel the effects of the atmosphere. they'll be about 80 miles above the earth at that point. as the shuttle comes through the atmosphere, it heats up to about 5,000 degrees on the outside. when it breaks through the atmosphere, many of the folks in florida will hear those famous son iic booms. about five minutes before the landing, the commander will take manual control of the shuttle and pilot it to the grounds. when the orbiter hits the runway, it will be going 220 miles an hour. the shuttle will land for the last time ever at
